UEFA Consider UCL Mini-Tournament To Finish Coronavirus-Hit Campaign

Posted By Bekee Wisdom | In Sports | Apr 17, 2020, 8:48 am

UEFA could decide to play the Champions League as a mini tournament in August.

European football’s governing body will discuss various plans during three crunch meetings next week with their prestige club tournament at the top of the agenda.

They are determined to press ahead with finishing the Champions League and Europa League but accept the games may have to come after domestic seasons are completed.

That has opened the door for mini tournaments for both competitions to be played out in August with the remaining games being played as one-off ties.

Chelsea and Manchester City both still have outstanding second leg last 16 ties which adds to the complication but they will consider the mini tournament to be played in one venue, potentially in Istanbul where the final was originally due to take place.

Manchester United and Wolves are still in the Europa League which is also due to be decided but the final was supposed to be in Gdansk.

UEFA will also discuss a final decision on the women’s Euros which was due to take place next year in England, the under-21s and also the Nations League at their ExCo meeting via a video conference next Thursday.

UEFA will start their week of meetings on Tuesday by talking to the 55 associations – including the English FA – when they will discuss the progress for each country during the coronavirus crisis.

There is also a UEFA meeting involving the European Clubs Association, European Leagues and the calendar working group on Wednesday.

That is likely to decide the various plans of action and restart dates put forward by leagues including the Premier League – and proposals could then be rubber stamped by the ExCo the following day.

It is a clear sign of progress with UEFA insisting that all options and outcomes are up for discussion and that nothing is off the table but there is an acceptance that the domestic leagues will have to be completed before they can relaunch the Champions League.
